Tennis News: Andy Murray Eyes Third Grand Slam Title
Defending champion Andy Murray is looking to bring a memorable 12 months to an end by winning the US Open for a second time.
Last year in New York, the Scot managed to end his long wait for Grand Slam glory by claiming the title at Flushing Meadows and he is well fancied in the tennis betting to challenge again this time.
After seeing off Tomas Berdych in the semi-finals, Murray edged a memorable final against Novak Djokovic 7-6 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 in a fluctuating encounter.
The thrilling victory ended his run of four defeats in Grand Slam finals. He was thrashed by Roger Federer in the 2008 US Open and 2010 Australian Open finals and by Djokovic in Melbourne in 2011 before taking Federer to four sets in the 2012 Wimbledon final.
He suffered another loss to Djokovic in Melbourne earlier this year before finally ending Great Britain’s 77-year wait for a Wimbledon men’s singles champion when he beat the Serb at SW19.
Murray is now hoping to reach his eighth Grand Slam final and emerge victorious for a third time.
However, it will not be easy for him as he has slipped to third in the world rankings behind Djokovic and a resurgent Rafael Nadal.
As the US Open seedings are usually based on the world rankings, Murray seems certain to be the third seed for the tournament, something which has seen his tennis betting odds slip.
Murray insists though that he is not feeling any added pressure even though he has struggled since winning Wimbledon less than two months ago, suffering early exits at both the Rogers Cup and the Cincinnati Open.
The 26-year-old said: "Coming into the US Open last year, I didn't know if I'd ever win a Grand Slam. "I'd lost in the final quite a few times and was doubting myself. To finally get over that hurdle helps a lot going into Slams. I feel more comfortable in the latter stages of tournaments."
